Muay Thai & Khun Boran Khmer Fighters not only punch and kick, they learn how to strike using their knees and elbows too. Our students learn powerful techniques and get a great work-out at the same time.
For grappling, our students learn how to fight on the ground, defeating opponents with chokes, arm-bars, other submissions, and ground striking techniques. Master Seng's Biography
Master Seng's martial arts training began when he was six years old. He started with gymnastics and the native Cambodian martial art of Yuthakun Kham, which was passed down from his family. This art includes many types of strikes, evasions, joint locks, chokes, pressure points, throws, grappling (monkey grip), and weapons techniques. People nowadays often compare this style to modern day mixed martial arts. However, it is the earliest form of a complete fighting system in Cambodia, dating back as early as the 6th century AD. While growing up, his father taught him acupressure, massage techniques, herbal medicine, and meditation.
As a teenager, Master Seng entered the Buddhist Temple and became a monk. After a few years, Master Seng left the temple for secular life. From 1971 to 1975 he studied with two eminent Pradal Serey instructos, Kong Meng and Pryach Sameoun. His training however was cut short short due to the Khmer Rouge Communication occupation of the whole country. He was taken from his family and put in a forced labor camp. Because anyone knew who the ancient Khmer martial art is being rounded up and killed by the Khmer Rouge Regime, Master Seng was forced to change his name during this time to Heau I Pouv, in order to avoid execution. He spent four years in a hard labor camp until the Vietnamese army attacked the camp during their invasion of Cambodia in 1979. In the midst of the fire and confusion, he was able to escape the labor camp.
Master Seng then made his way to a refugee camp along the border of neighboring Thailand. There, he began sharing his techniques with the other martial artists and he incorporated the elements of Aikido, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Karate, and Tae Kwon Do into his fighting repertoire. It was during this time that Master Seng began his training in Hapkido with Master San Kim Sean and Pradal Serey (khmer kickboxing, also known as Muay Thai) under Master Chhang Kwan (the father of Pradal Serey). Under Master Kwans guidance and training, Master Seng (still known as Heau I Pouv at that time) became Muay Thai Kickboxing champion in 1982 and 1984, with a professional record of eighteen wins and one loss. Master Sengs nom de guerre Heau I Pouv is still a household name, as Cambodian parents still tell their children to behave or else they will never be like the great Heau I Pouv.
After winning the 1984 Muay Thai Championship, Master Seng returned to the refugee camp on the Thai border to continue teaching Hapkido to the Khmer refugees and the camp officers. In 1987, Master Seng received his third-degree black belt promotion in Hapkido from Master Kim Bang Ky. In 1988, Master Seng was still living in Thailand when he relocated to a PRPC (Philippine Refugee Processing Center) refugee camp to teach Hapkido to American military officers working there. While he was there, Master Seng was sponsored by the US Embassy in Manila to participate in the 1988 Competition of Asian Martial Arts and won the Self Defense Championship.
Later that year, Master Seng moved to the United States under the sponsorship of his brother living in Providence, Rhode Island. There, he opened a Hapkido school in the garage of his sisters house where he began teaching other Khmer immigrants in the community. As his school gained popularity outside the Cambodian community, his name grew more and more famous in Rhode Island and eventually throughout New England. Having earned the respect of Master Jiu Jitsu instructor Rocco Parillo, Master Seng was given a timeslot in Master Parillos school to teach Hapkido in the community.
In 1992, Master Seng was named Instructor of the Year by the World Hapkido Federation and relocated to North Attleboro, Massachusetts, where he opened his own school. There, he instructed not only local residents, but also many law enforcement officers from surrounding communities. During this time, he was also training with the founder of Sin Moo Hapkido Master Ji Han-Jae. In 1993, 1995, and 2003, Master Seng was invited by the Khmer Hapkido Federation to return to Cambodia and teach the national police hapkido restraint and control techniques. Master Seng also hosted many seminars throughout the United States and has been promoted to the rank of ninth degree black belt by the Khmer Hapkido Federation.
In the winter of 2007, Master Seng and a few students were invited to return to Cambodia to demonstrate techniques, donate equipment, and study Yuthakun Kham as well as Hapkido and Boxkator. During the visit, Master Seng was promoted to Chairman of the Board of Directors by the Khmer Hapkido Federation, a rare and prestigious honor. Master Seng is recognized throughout the world for his profound knowledge and superior techniques in the Hapkido martial art as well as the other disciplines of Muay Thai and Yuthakun Kham.
